HOW HEALING WORKS
Healing isn’t about silencing symptoms. It’s about understanding why they’re there.
THE BODY IS ONE SYSTEM
Woven together,
not in pieces.
Most healing treats the body in pieces, a pill for the gut, a cream for the skin, a different specialist for each symptom. I see it differently.
The body is one connected system: the gut speaks to the hormones, the nervous system speaks to the skin, the emotions speak to all of it. Tend one part in isolation, and you miss how the whole is woven together.

HOW THE BODY FALLS OUT OF BALANCE
It begins with the inner terrain.
In the holistic tradition I work within, health begins with the body’s inner terrain, its balance, what many call its pH. The idea is this: when we live under constant strain, that inner environment tips, becoming more acidic and depleted, and the body slides from thriving into simply coping.
What tips it is the ordinary weight of modern life:
01
Chronic stress and suppressed emotion
02
Processed food and sugar
03
Lifeless, low-quality or chemically treated water
04
Environmental toxins
05
Some medications, and heavy metals
06
Conventional skincare and cosmetics, the skin is our largest organ
When this load builds faster than the body can clear it, when the “toxin bucket” overflows, the body stops prioritising vitality and moves into survival. And that’s when the dominoes begin to fall.
THE DOMINO EFFECT
One system leans
on the next.
Strain never stays in one place. One overloaded system leans on the next, and the next. As I’ve come to see it, it tends to fall in this order:
•• 01
Gut & microbiome
The gut barrier weakens and the balance of gut bacteria shifts (dysbiosis) — where so much of health begins.
→
•• 02
Inflammation & immune load
A leaky, imbalanced gut keeps the immune system switched on, and low-grade inflammation spreads beyond the gut.
→
•• 03
Hormones & thyroid
Ongoing inflammation and the body’s filtering load disturb hormone balance and thyroid function.
→
•• 04
Blood sugar & adrenals
Blood-sugar regulation wobbles and the stress-hormone system runs overworked.
•• 05
Cellular energy
At the deepest level, the mitochondria — your cells’ energy — tire, and that’s felt everywhere, from energy to mood.
A simple picture of how strain tends to spread; not a precise biological map.
Tend the first domino, and the line steadies.
THE EMOTIONAL LAYER
The body holds
what we don’t.
In many healing traditions, the body and the emotions are read as one. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, each organ is paired with an emotion it tends to hold.
꧞
Liver
anger & frustration
꧞
Gallbladder
resentment
꧞
Kidneys
fear
꧞
Lungs
grief & sadness
꧞
Heart
joy & connection
When a feeling goes unfelt for long enough, the body often carries it for us. This is why we tend the emotions, not just the chemistry.
When the dominoes keep falling, the body starts to speak. First in whispers, then louder.
01
FIRST STEP IN
EARLY SIGNALS
the body whispering
Fatigue
Headaches
Bloating
Skin flare-ups (eczema, acne)
PMS
Poor sleep
Low mood
Like walking 5 metres into the forest, only 5 metres back to the path.
→
02
FURTHER IN
SETTLE PATTERNS
left unheard, they dig in
Ongoing digestive issues
Hormonal imbalance
Recurring infections
Persistent inflammation
Anxiety or burnout
Cycles that won’t regulate
Now you’re 10 metres in; 10 metres back.

DEEP IN THE WOODS
DEEP, CHRONIC STRAIN
a body with little resilience left
Long-standing, harder-to-shift chronic conditions that have taken root over years, including autoimmune conditions, chronic inflammation, complex hormonal or metabolic issues, and those navigating cancer or recovery from serious illness.
The sooner you begin, the shorter the walk home, back to balance, and a solid foundation.
And deep, chronic strain always belongs with your doctor too.
Deep in the forest; 15 metres back, and slower going.
FOR EXAMPLE: THE SKIN
Chase the rash, or tend the root.
Take eczema. Physically, it’s often tied to the gut: when the gut wall is inflamed or too permeable, irritation can surface on the skin and in herbal traditions, the skin is read as a messaging system for what’s happening within.
But there’s usually an emotional thread too. Skin so often flares when we’re under stress, or holding something we haven’t been able to express.
Treat only the skin, and you chase the rash. Tend the gut, and the feeling beneath it, and the skin often calms on its own.
By overloading the body with food, you strangle the soul and render it less active.

WHY CLEANSING - AND FASTING
Lighten the load,
and give the body room.
So much of healing is simply lightening the load, and then giving the body room to do what it already knows how to do: repair, regulate, restore. Through rest, nourishment, gentle cleansing and, where it’s right, fasting, we make that space.
Fasting, in particular, invites the body to rest from constant digestion and activates natural processes such as autophagy, the body’s own way of clearing out and renewing its cells. And in the stillness, the mind grows quiet enough to meet what is usually buried.
Lighten the load, and the body remembers how to heal.
THE DEEPER LAYER
The body is only
half the story.
The lasting change comes when we also meet the emotions and the beliefs held beneath the symptoms clearing the old patterns, not just the physical residue. In my experience, most of the real work lives here.
Body
Emotions
The subconscious
It’s why my approach moves through three layers. Tend all three, and healing holds.
A LENS, NOT A PROMISE
A gentle look at where
your body wants to begin.
This is how I understand healing, a philosophy I have lived and witnessed, offered alongside, never instead of, good medical care. If it resonates, the first step is always the same: a conversation, and a gentle look at where your body wants to begin.
